Using Kinu on Desktop

Some evenings you want a bigger screen and a quiet moment. If you already have a Kinu account, you can open it in any modern browser at kinu.care, free or Plus. With Kinu Plus, it sits right alongside your phone, with everything in sync.

The mobile app is still your home base. Desktop is there for the times you want room to read back, reflect, and write a little more.

What you need

If you already have a Kinu account from your phone, you can sign in at kinu.care and use Kinu in a browser too, free or Plus. On the free plan, that browser holds its own local copy, up to 10 people, the same way your phone holds its own local copy, and the two do not stay in step with each other. Kinu Plus lifts the limit to unlimited people and keeps your phone, tablet, and browser synchronized.

You'll also need the Kinu account you already use on your phone. Kinu requires an account so it can back up, restore, and sync your data. There is no separate web sign-up. You create your account on mobile, then sign in on the web with the same one.

Getting started

There's nothing extra to configure. No pairing step, no QR codes, no separate password to remember. Just sign in and you're set.

Your data stays in sync (Kinu Plus)

With Kinu Plus, every change you make on one device flows to the others. Add a person on your laptop, record a moment on your phone, update a birthday on either one, and it all lines up. On the free plan, this browser and your phone each hold their own separate copy instead.

Here's what happens behind the scenes. Each change is saved on the device you're using first, so the app stays fast and works offline. It's then encrypted on your device and sent to our server. Your other devices pick it up on their next sync, usually within moments of coming online.

It works offline too

The web app keeps a copy of your data right in your browser, using IndexedDB. That means Kinu keeps working even when your connection drops. You can browse your people, read back moments, and look over upcoming dates while offline. If you're on Kinu Plus, anything you changed syncs to your other devices once you're back online.

Your privacy on the web

The web app follows the same rules as the phone app.

• Your synced data is encrypted on your device before it's uploaded, and it stays encrypted in transit and at rest.
• We don't access your relationship content as part of running Kinu.
• Private notes stay private. They're never analyzed, never surfaced, and never used by any feature.

Today the key that protects your synced data is tied to your account, so we don't claim true zero-knowledge encryption. User-held keys are an improvement we want to make in the future. For the full picture, see What we can and can't see.

You don't have to pick one. Each is good for different moments.

Use whichever feels right at the time. Your people are there on both.
