App Is Slow
Quick fixes to try when Kinu feels sluggish, plus why a local-first app can take a moment to warm up.
Kinu should feel quick and calm. If it has started to lag, freeze for a beat, or take a while to open, the steps below will sort out almost every cause. Most of the time, a simple restart is all it takes.
Restart Kinu first
Close Kinu completely and open it again. A fresh start clears temporary data from memory and resolves the large majority of slowdowns.
Close the app fully
On mobile, swipe Kinu away from your recent apps so it is not just running in the background. On the web, close the tab.
Reopen it
Launch Kinu again and give it a few seconds to settle.
If it still feels sluggish, work through the rest of this page.
Make sure you are on the latest version
We ship performance improvements regularly, so an out-of-date app is one of the most common reasons Kinu feels slow.
- On mobile: update Kinu from the App Store or Google Play.
- On the web: refresh the page in your browser. A hard refresh clears the old version from your browser's memory.
Give it a moment on first open
Kinu keeps your data on your device first. This is what lets the app work offline and keeps your information private. You can read more about this in how your data is stored.
The trade-off is that the very first open after launching, updating, or signing in can take a few extra seconds while Kinu loads your people and moments from the local database. This is normal. Once it has loaded, day-to-day use should feel snappy.
If you have a large number of people, expect that first load to be a little longer. It settles quickly.
Check your device
Sometimes the slowness has nothing to do with Kinu itself. A quick check often clears it up.
- Low storage space. When a device is nearly full, any app that writes to a local database slows down. Freeing up space usually helps right away.
- Many apps open at once. A lot of apps running in the background can limit the memory available to Kinu. Closing a few can make a difference.
- A device that needs a restart. If your phone has been on for a long time, a full device restart can clear things up.
- Older hardware. Older devices may take a little longer with larger sets of data. This is the nature of keeping everything on your device rather than on a server, where your information stays under your control.
On the web
If Kinu feels slow in your browser, try these in order.
- Refresh the page, ideally with a hard refresh, to load the latest version.
- Try a different browser. Kinu works best in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Older browsers can struggle.
- Open a private or incognito window. This rules out a heavy extension or cached data as the cause. If Kinu is fast there, an extension or stale cache is likely the culprit.
- Clear your browser data for the Kinu site if a private window confirms it. Your relationship data is safe, because on Kinu Plus it is synced to your account and will reload after you sign in again.
Web and desktop access at kinu.care is a Kinu Plus feature.
If a slowdown started after an update or long use
Occasionally, on-device data can get into an unusual state after an update or after a long stretch of heavy use. Reinstalling the app gives it a completely clean start.
Before you reinstall, protect your data first. How you do that depends on your plan.
On the free plan, your data lives only on your device. Sync is a Kinu Plus feature, so reinstalling permanently deletes everything on the free plan. Either export your data to a file first, or upgrade to Plus and let sync finish before you remove the app.
Back up your data
If you are on Kinu Plus, open Settings and confirm sync has finished. If you are on the free plan, export your data to a file.
Reinstall Kinu
Delete the app and install it again from the App Store or Google Play.
Sign back in
Open Kinu and sign in with the same account you used before. On Kinu Plus, your synced data will download. If you exported a file, you can bring it back in.
If you are on Plus and your data does not return after reinstalling, see sync troubleshooting.
