Take the test

One of twenty-four shadings of the four friendship styles in Kinu's vocabulary: a badge from a short test, sharpened by the leaning your answers showed most clearly.

Noticing is the word for what your answers showed about memory when they sat clearly to one side of your own average: you keep what people tell you. The name of the pet, the date of the interview, the worry mentioned once at a bus stop: where most minds file these under general warmth, yours keeps the particulars, retrievable, still attached to the person who said them.

At range, the word does different work in each style.

In front of Opener it aims the first move at the day that matters. In front of Gatherer it does the seating: every table built from what a year of dinners taught you. In front of Harbour it keeps a returning friend's life warm across the silence, so nothing needs re-explaining. In front of Hearth it stocks the room, guest by guest, before anyone arrives.

What all four share is the effect: the people around a Noticing anything feel specifically known, not generally liked. It is not a better way of holding people than Present, its opposite number; it is a different instrument. The word appears only when yours played clearly. And like the badge itself, the word reads your habits taken as a whole, never any single friendship; most people have at least one friendship that runs the other way.

A guest sits down at your table and the vegetarian was never asked twice; the two who fell out in spring are at opposite ends without either noticing the geometry. Your bookings carry notes only you keep.

Noticing turns assembly into welcome. Anyone can fill a room; your rooms are provisioned, person by person, from a memory of particulars that makes each guest quietly certain they were expected specifically. The introductions sharpen the same way: you do not just sense that two people would get on, you remember why, the shared town, the same strange hobby, the same home town twenty years apart, and you seat the reason next to itself.

The move is to spend the detail outside the logistics too. The thing a guest said at your table in March is worth a message in May, one to one, nothing to do with any upcoming plan. You keep more of your friends' lives than almost anyone they know; let them find that out in the quiet weeks, not only at the table.
